Amber Villas
Diani, Mombasa, Kenya

The Roads Less Traveled

Modeliste thrives on introducing our readers to out of the ordinary beach and travel destinations across the world. This month focusing on the beautiful East African coasts of Kenya and Tanzania, we traveled to the Diani Beach area on the South coast of Mombasa, Kenya, and the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. Long known to Europeans as a holiday destination, many locals are conversant in Italian, German, and English. Increasingly, safari adventurers from around the world are finding these coastal destinations a perfect place to relax and reflect after the heightened sensory safari experience.  Join those who are enjoying the additional wonders of the Indian Ocean coastal culture, pristine white sand beaches, snorkeling and diving the reefs, water sports, and extraordinary beautiful villas and hotels.

Amber Villas, Diani Beach, Kenya

Kenya is a country of surprises and contrasts, diverse and vibrant. From the magnificence of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the south, the dramatic Rift Valley and Lake Victoria in the west, Mt. Kenya in the north; from the traditional culture of the Maasai herdsmen of the savannah to the urban clamor and building boom of Nairobi, a journey to Kenya will be unforgettable.

Many travelers are discovering Kenya’s eastern Indian Ocean border and the tropical beauty of the South Coast region of Kenya, 30 km. ssouth of the historic bustling city of Mombasa. Here lies beautiful, tranquil Diani Beach, a surprising escape where seemingly endless pristine white sand beach fringed by statuesque palms is still unspoiled. Gentle waves lap the shores, and sea breezes beckon with perfect conditions for kite and windsurfing. Here visitors find a growing community of water sport enthusiasts, sunlovers, restaurants and entertaining nightlife.

And here Modeliste has discovered an almost hidden jewel, the private retreat of Amber Villas. A short direct flight from Nairobi to Ukunda will bring you to the beauty of Diani Beach, bypassing the perpetual traffic of Mombasa. Your Amber Villa driver awaits with a warm welcome ready to whisk you to your private paradise.

Tucked away off the coastal road, the gates open to reveal 5 beautifully appointed villas, each a separate enclosure with a living, dining and kitchen area, two or three bedroom suites, and private pool. The decor is upscale casual sophistication with ultimate modern Italian imported furnishings from the stunning kitchen, contemporary living area, beds, baths, and beyond. Here is the perfect retreat for family or friends, a home away from home where you gather in peaceful privacy and comfort with easy access to the wondrous beach, nearby shopping and nightlife.

Each room in the villa opens to the pool terrace, surrounded by umbrella lounges and a heavenly raised cabana sheltered from the tropical sun by a soft floating canopy.

The spacious suites feature luxurious king sized beds, sumptuous cotton linens and plump pillows ensuring your most peaceful sleep. Your ensuite bath is a retreat in itself, anchored by a stunning deep soaking tub imported from Italy, dual sinks, an indoor and outdoor shower, and ample closets and dressing area. Impeccably clean and beautifully maintained, the villas are overseen by manager Anne to the highest standards.

Amber Villas are unique in many ways, but the highlight is having your very own personal chef who will prepare a daily menu catering to your individual desires and dietary needs. Our talented chef, Salem, magically created an array of meals, appetizers and cocktails, from the freshest of ingredients with astounding finesse.

Amber Villas owner, Andreas Boldt, introduced us to this concept before our arrival, with options of going to the local supermarkets with our driver to choose our basics or planning a menu with Salem and providing a list. Each day Salem would negotiate the best prices in the fruit and vegetable markets and most importantly at the fish market with local fishermen who bring their catch fresh from the sea each morning. Snapper and lobster abound and preparation was delectable. Morning omelets, feather light pancakes, delicious chicken curry, rice pilaf, creative salads: each day was a festival of taste treats.

The Galu beach area, a 3 minute walk from Amber Villas, is ranked as a top kite and windsurfing area where international competitions are held. Glass bottom boats carry visitors to the nearby reef for astounding snorkeling, and diving tours are easily arranged. Amber Villas reaches out to guests to ensure every aspect of your stay is maximized from arranging personal guides and tours to the Shimba Hills National Reserve, home of the rare black and white Colobus monkeys, deep sea fishing, a dhow cruise, even golf. The nearby Wasini Island Kisite Marine Park is an excellent reef snorkel destination…..or content yourself poolside with cocktails at hand and enjoy Kenya’s tropical villa paradise.
