JANUARY: Evaluate and get to know your skin.
For most people our skin changes over time. The first step in finding the right skin care regimen is understanding the needs of your skin type. Classify your skin as to one of the following skin types: Oily, Sensitive, Dry, Acne Prone, or Combination. An individualized skin care regimen is key to achieving a healthier skin and dermatologists can guide you in selecting skin care products designed for your type of skin.
Include in your daily skin care routine a daily moisturizer appropriate for your skin type which contains a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher and give it a few weeks to work. Prioritize your aging-skin concerns and address your #1 concern. Using too many anti-aging products at once can irritate your skin. Have realistic expectations as over the counter anti-aging products deliver limited results.
FEBRUARY: Implement small changes that can make a BIG difference
ALWAYS protect your skin from the sun and other harmful UV rays such as indoor tanning beds and sun lamps. USE a moisturizer daily to preserve moisture in your skin. WASH your skin with a soap-free cleanser twice daily and after sweating. STOP smoking to prevent a dull and dry complexion, leathery looking skin, and premature lines and wrinkles. APPLY a broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more, generously to all exposed skin. Don’t forget your feet if you will be wearing sandals. RE-APPLY sunscreen approximately every two hours, immediately after swimming or sweating. BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS when you are near water, concrete, and sand because they reflect and intensify the damaging sun rays. SEEK SHADE when available. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10: 00 am and 2:00 pm, if your shadow is shorter than you are, find a shady spot. WEAR a large brimmed hat and sunglasses. HYDRATE your body by drinking enough water.
