As if you needed an excuse to plan another stylish beach getaway, the Australian duo designer Emma Jones and surf photographer Scott Bauer, has brought us one of the sexiest lines of swimwear yet- Gypsea. And, we haven’t been this excited about bikinis in a long time.
Inspired by their love for design and all things beautiful, each piece of sleek and chic wearable embodies what it means to be a “modern day mermaid” and has that one-of-a-kind feel that’s sure to make you a standout poolside. We caught up with these two very talented artists and got the scoop on what makes their line oh so unique and one of the hottest trends to hit the beaches this season.
Gypsea Swimwear
Modeliste: Describe the overall concept of Gypsea.
Create standout/unique pieces of wearable art using photography and nature as our main inspiration.
Modeliste: How did Gypsea evolve into the brand it is today? Tell us about your journey.
Scott: It initially start out as a bit of fun experimenting how to use wave photographs onto swimwear. With my background as a photographer I just really wanted to find other mediums for my work that were different. I bought the idea to Emma some years ago about the concept and she agreed it was something she wanted to also try. We had a lot of fun sampling and it evolved from there, we created some really cool samples and we got some really good feedback and decided to start the label. The name came from myself being a nomad as a surf photographer, constantly search for perfect waves all around the world.
Modeliste: What inspired the creation of your latest collection?
Scott: It sounds funny to say this every time I get asked this, but nature is always our main inspiration with everything we do. But more so this collection it’s more about being active, combining cool photo prints with really functional pieces that girls can wear while they are being active in the ocean.
Modeliste: How would you describe the Gypsea girl?
Emma: Being a Gypsea girls is all about being yourself, having a big appreciation for nature and love of travel and life by the beach.
Modeliste: What do you see as the hottest swimwear trends for 2016?
Emma: For us it’s all about active functional swimwear that is flattering no matter what shape you may be.
Modeliste: Are there any rules to picking out the ultimate swimsuit or bikini you live by?
Emma: Generally you should pick the suit you feel most comfortable in. A confident woman is a sexy woman. Other than that there are no rules : )
Modeliste: Beach season is something we all look forward to with equal amounts of excitement and dread. Do you have any tips for feeling and looking your best in a swimsuit?
Emma: Lots of girls like to choose a similar style to the underwear they love wearing (bra style, sports tops, skimpy or full cut bottoms, etc.), because that is normally what they feel most comfortable & confident in.
Modeliste: Favorites from your latest collection?
Scott: Zeepop because it was so different and so feminine, I’m a big fan of Micha Ashton Moore’s work using film and double exposures.
Emma: Karijini because it has a special place in our hearts, Scott our designer & photographer went there with a image in mind for a collection. While trekking out of Hamersely Gorge late one afternoon, he found it in a crystal clear rock pool. The colour of the earth hitting the side of the gorge and reflecting through rock pool, it was like the water turned to molten lava.
Modeliste: How do you describe your personal style?
Emma: Clean, crisp, I love matching colourful pieces with whites and blacks.
Modeliste: Style Icon?
Emma: Iris Apfel. She is an inspiration in style and mindset.
Modeliste: Celebrity sightings or fans of the line?
Scott: Favourite to date was Rihanna wearing our Karijini Deep V one Piece in Barbados.
Emma: Demi Lovato wearing the Bellini Cap Shoulder Top at the Jimmy Kimmel show. Love her curves!
Modeliste: Tell us about your Artist Program.
Scott: The label start back in the day using my images, we then decided to get some more diversity to the label we would invite artists/photographers to do there own collections. It gives artists another medium/outlet that they rarely get access to and also helps support them by paying them for their work. We’re planning in the future to do more work with differents mediums away from photography
Modeliste: What we can look forward to with Gypsea in 2016?
Scott: Really excited to build our label internationally. We’ve had such a good response so far, so we’re excited to build on that. Miami swim week is always a big one on the calendar, it’s the epicentre for swim worldwide. Our next collection will launch in July this year.
Modeliste: Tell us some of your favorites!
Vacation spot:
Scott: A place always close to our heart; The Coral Coast, North Western Australia. For a winter escape it’s amazing, 27 degree days, white sandy beached and it’s all about life around the ocean, surf, diving, camping on the beach.
Beauty must-have:
Emma: Not really one at the moment, very conscious about using natural products that aren’t tested on animals.
Must-have accessory:
Emma: For us it’s all about the beach, loving LayDay towels at the moment.
