Journey back in time with a ride on the vintage steam locomotive Skunk Train, a connection to the rich logging history of Fort Bragg and Mendocino. The world famous Redwood Route has carried families over a century, venturing along Pudding Creek Estuary through meadows, canyons, and stunning redwood forest, with views of trees many over 300 feet tall and 1000 years old. Once the link for logging families and workers as well as commercial transport of all kinds of goods, lumber and logs, the railroad has operated continuously since 1885. The train depot remains at the center of Fort Bragg, (once an early army garrison and Pomo Indian reservation), and current tourist center, a must for visitors to enjoy this piece of history. Logs from this area rebuilt San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, its significance undeniable in California history and in railroad history as well.
The Skunk Train is an enjoyable experience for all ages, its name origin is always the first question curious children and disconcerted adults ask at the ticket counter. The young conductors enjoy sharing the story of the once popular self propelled rail motorcars or railbuses introduced in 1925 whose foul smelling gasoline engines and smoky pot-bellied stoves led to the lasting description of Skunk Train, though the hour tour now boasts fresh air and scenic views. A narrative of the train history also points out special details throughout the tour along the 40 mile track.
The newest addition to the Skunk Train experience is Rail Biking. After the train ride, guests are offered a fun fitness exercise of biking the rails on specialized 2 person rail bikes that are a memorable experience and photo op perfect for Instagram and Facebook friends. Fun for all ages, the quiet 7 mile ride offers glimpses of wildlife along the way, and an assist with an electric motor if desired.
