Visit the historic lighthouse and keeper’s quarters on this pristine island known for its beauty in the sand dunes and a pristine spot to camp or spend the day basking in the uninhabited natural seascape.

Shackelford Banks

Wild mustangs have thrived and remained wild on this secluded island with its deserted beaches and natural wonder. The horses have inhabited the island for over 400 years with some speculating that it was a ship wrecked Spanish exploring expedition that somehow landed the first horses on the island. The island can be reached via the Island Express Ferry Service.

Additional activities include: Coastal kayaking, bird watching, fishing, diving stand-up paddle boarding, surfing and horseback riding. A visit to the area is not complete without stops the Maritime Museum, Old Burying Grounds, Fort Macon State Park or the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knolls Shore.
