New Zealand–born model Maia Cotton has captivated the fashion world with her effortless elegance, striking presence, and natural ability to bring editorials to life. Discovered at just 14 years old via Instagram, Maia quickly transitioned from local shoots in New Zealand to working internationally in fashion capitals like Sydney and New York. Over the years, she has built an impressive career, walking the runway for some of the world’s most celebrated brands—including the iconic Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show—and appearing in countless campaigns and editorials. Beyond modeling, Maia’s passion for creativity extends into the art world, where she co-founded a gallery with her sister in New Zealand.  As Modeliste’s latest cover star, Maia shares the moments that shaped her career, her favorite fashion inspirations, and what continues to excite her about the industry.

How did you first get into modeling?
When I was 14, Instagram was very new and a local New Zealand agent reached out through the app. Because New Zealand is so small, I was already aware of the agency (62 Models) and was excited. My mum took me to meet her, and shortly after I started working in Sydney and then the US.

What was your very first modeling job?
It was for a local New Zealand department store called Farmers. I was shooting the teen section and was extremely nervous.

Who or what inspired you to pursue modeling?
I always loved fashion and collecting magazines. I thought I would work in the industry in some capacity. I also had such an affinity for New York. Being from New Zealand, it felt like the center of the universe. Modeling felt like the perfect way to combine both obsessions.

What is your favorite part about being a model?
The possibility of something exciting and different happening every day. I get to see the world and work with incredibly talented people. After doing this for so many years, it’s still special that the job can surprise me. You really never know what opportunity might come through the door.

What has been your most memorable modeling experience?
I’d be lying if I didn’t say walking the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2018. That was a surreal moment. But there have been so many memorable experiences along the way.

What’s your favorite fashion trend right now?
I’ve recently become obsessed with texture after Louise Trotter’s debut at Bottega. Everything felt so luxurious and tactile—it made me want every single piece.

What’s your go-to outfit when you want to feel unstoppable?
My favorite pair of denim styled with a crisp white tee, black glasses, and a leather coat. It’s classic but always looks good.

What is your favorite city to shoot in?
Probably Sydney. The weather is always amazing, and it’s one of my favorite cities to spend time in.

Do you have a skincare ritual before a big shoot?
Actually, no. I try to maintain a consistent routine rather than do anything dramatic right before a shoot. I get facials in New York at Tasha Marc once every two months or so, and she has put me on a routine that works for me. She’s amazing.

What’s one beauty product you can’t live without?
An eyelash curler—without a doubt.

One beauty trend you love right now?
This isn’t new, but really fresh skin and a messy eye. I think it’s so chic and effortless.

What’s the most-used emoji in your DMs?

What’s your guilty pleasure TV show?
Honestly, Below Deck. I always say I’ll watch one episode and then suddenly I’ve watched five.

What’s the most-played song on your playlist right now?
It changes all the time, but today I’ll say Talk Down by Dijon.

What’s the funniest behind-the-scenes moment you’ve experienced?
Recently, I shot a story at a marina in Long Island. It was a great day but really long, and at the end of it the marina had locked us in. We were completely stuck and delirious. I just laughed and laughed. Eventually someone came to rescue us and had to cut the chain on the electronic gate to get us out.

If you weren’t modeling, what would you be doing right now?
Something in the arts or creative world. When I was younger, I didn’t realize it was a job, but I love the idea of being an art director and putting together a concept for a shoot or story.

What’s one thing your fans would be surprised to learn about you?
My sister and I started a small art gallery in New Zealand. Our dad is an artist and so is my sister, Mika. Creativity has always been a big part of our lives, so we opened a small space in the Bay of Islands to showcase artists we love.

What’s your favorite way to relax after a long day?
A great meal, a good movie, and my husband.

Do you prefer heels or sneakers?
Torn—but heels.
