Modeliste: On a scale of one to ten how excited are you about life right now?
Sofia: First of all, I love this question. I like to operate at a 13, haha. Not to go all existential, but what’s the point of all this if you’re not loving who you’re around and finding that which you love to do?
Modeliste: Where were you born?
Sofia: I was born in a small village in Fes, Morocco, but I grew up in Orange County, California.
Modeliste: How did you first get into acting? Tell us about your journey becoming an actress.
Sofia: Whew, embarking on this journey was a doozy. I loved acting from a young age, but I particularly enjoyed the theatre and the adrenaline rush that it comes with. Then I saw Xena, Warrior Princess, and like most girls of my generation wanted to throw her chakram around and ride off into the sunset atop a Palomino. Since I couldn’t have that, I decided I’d manifest my own version of that onscreen. When I was about 17 years old, I was scouted by a talent agent who is now my manager; I auditioned my butt off until I booked a role I was passionate about and it just sorta happened. I was also immensely lucky to have had the opportunities I’ve had.
Modeliste: What you love most about being an actress?
Sofia: I love the confidence that comes with playing the roles I’ve been fortunate enough to play. The strangest thing happens when you don that costume for the first time and start to feel the character come to life – you’re going, “yeah. I feel tough in my own skin too.” There’s this fearlessness that is a big part of giving yourself completely to what you’re doing and it’s very empowering.
Modeliste: What is the best thing that happened this year?
Sofia: I booked a video game that I’m crazy about (I can’t say much about it, however) and I’m thrilled to see how it turns out.
Modeliste: What are your 3 favorite Fall fashion trends?
Sofia: I love the comeback neon is making, and also patent fabrics. Glossy, colorful eye makeup is another one that I’ve been enjoying. I love things that are wacky and different, so those trends are way up my alley.
Modeliste: If you could sing a duet with anyone, who would it be?
Sofia: Oh man…Chris Cornell. Hands down.
Modeliste: Last book you read.
Sofia: Verses for the Dead, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I’m a huge crime thriller freak.
Modeliste: What’s your favorite country to visit?
Sofia: So far, my favorite country to visit has been Italy but that can always change on a dime. The show’s next season will be taking us to Thailand so that could quickly become my new obsession.
Modeliste: Upcoming projects you can tell us about?
Sofia: I’ll be working on a movie soon that shoots in Louisiana and stars Nicholas Cage, and I can’t wait to get started! We’re both detectives in the movie trying to figure out who’s been killing cops in the city, and I play his partner.
Modeliste: Heels or flats?
Sofia: Heels…can I say boots?
Modeliste: Lipstick or Lipgloss?
Sofia: Lipstick
Modeliste: Best beauty advice you’ve ever received?
Sofia: Pay the most attention to your skin; cause that’s the base the makeup goes on. If that’s kept in good shape, you’re good to go. 🙂
Modeliste: Go-to beauty product at the moment?
Sofia: Anything made by RMS beauty – I’m obsessed with her products. I particularly love her cream blushes and eye polishes.
Modeliste: What are you binge watching these days?
Sofia: I just finished binge watching season 1 of Absentia, I loved it! I told you, I’m a total crime thriller fanatic.
Modeliste: Best fan moment?
Sofia: I was at one of the Golden Globes after parties surrounded by Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and so many other actors and actresses I’ve watched and respected for so long and I had tojust stand there and BE COOL. Whew. Lemme tell yah…much easier said than done.
Modeliste: If you could star alongside any other actor/actress who would it be?
Sofia: I’m gonna fire away on that one and say Cate Blanchette. Goodness that woman is a force of nature.
Modeliste: What would be the title of your autobiography?
Sofia: Haha, pretty sure it would be “How to Play with Fire and Not Burn”
— I definitely like to live on any kind of edge.
Modeliste: Why you love Modeliste magazine
Sofia: I love that Modeliste is fresh, glossy but also keeps it interesting and creative. The stories you feature are always a nice, refreshing take on what these spreads usually are and I love the colors and the way it’s all presented.
