Morocco oozes with raw energy from dawn till dusk. United by a vibrant culture, the friendly locals give Morocco its charming character. Over the years, Morocco has earned a reputation for tourism and hospitality that is second to none. Merhaba! The people of Morocco welcome one and all, with a passion for exhibiting the best of their culture. Whether exploring cities like Marrakech, Casablanca and Fes, or going off the beaten path, Morocco offers something for every taste. From luxury palace hotels and resorts to tiny hidden beach shacks, Morocco has it all. The diverse landscape of Morocco also offers a broad spectrum of activities for the adventure travellers. With the Sahara desert, Atlas Mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean in its repertoire, Morocco is also a fabulous destination for active holidays and wellness retreats. In our recent Modeliste tour of sunny Morocco, we experienced some highlights that we are delighted to share with you.
Marrakech: The Red City
The cultural capital of Morocco, Marrakech is known for its red sandstone Citadel, beautiful gardens, palaces, and mosques. The fortified part of the city, the Medina is a world heritage site with massive Souk (marketplace), and tiny streets with beautiful Riad homes decorated in Moorish design. The local bites and sites are all in the heart of Medina where you can conveniently get lost for as long as you like. Meandering the streets and tiny lane ways of the medina is no different to a game of Hide and Seek. The tantalising fragrances, eye-catching colours, and dynamic sounds of a bustling old town create an interesting atmosphere that causes a time-lapse of sorts. Visiting the Place D’Jeema el Fna, the palaces, prancing around the lush gardens, gallivanting through the Historical Kasbah, or bargain shopping at the Souk, are some of the customary activities that every visitor is recommended to try at least once. The idea of bargaining may seem confronting, however, even the locals welcome bargaining as a healthy way of engaging with their customers. Of course, we don’t recommend haggling in shopping malls!
Did someone say food? An authentic Moroccan cooking class with our travel partners www.rougetravel.com is something we highly recommend. Its a great way to explore the Souk, and grab the food items to cook your first Moroccan meal. Unfortunately, there is no bargaining when buying Vegetables – food has a fixed price! A wonderful two hours spent cooking Tajine and Couscous with a pro Moroccan chef is undoubtedly the best way to experience authentic Moroccan cuisine. After scrumptious lunch, there is an option to return to your hotel for a snooze or join other activities. Well, we weren’t going to lose our limited time in Marrakech, so we chose to get down and dirty! The team from Rouge Travel offers transfers from your hotel to Palmeraie for a thrilling afternoon riding Camels and Quad-bikes around the oasis. The day goes by quickly, especially when you’re having fun. A popular way to unwind from the day is by visiting the ‘Hammam’, a traditionally built Moroccan bathhouse.
