Housed in a Greek mansion and steeped in 250 years of history, the Sacred House offers a special setting for travelers looking to explore Turkey’s enigmatic destination, Cappadocia. Located in Cappadocia’s Ugrup area, each of the Sacred House’s 21 uniquely decorated and named rooms (think Full Moon, Sanctuary, Bacchus, Harem, Byzantium Treasury, Old Chapel, King’s Ego, Anka’s Lair, Opium, Deep Forest) boast antique furniture, fireplaces and lots of art – from fascinating sculptures spanning ancient times to the Renaissance era to famous paintings which reflect the type of stone used in that particular room. TVs are purposely missing from the guest rooms, which add to the mystical and magical atmosphere of the boutique hotel, while a museum-like library containing rare, first-edition books by famous philosophers Nietzsche, Sartre, Schopenhauer, Husley, Goethe, Camus and Blake offers visitors the experience of an intellectual journey.
The property was created by Turan Gülcüoğlu who, 15 years ago, restored the ruined Armenian mansion in order to “create a sophisticated, intellectual and aristocratic space for high culture, a divine haven with unique energy, aura and virtue.” In 2009, the Sacred House joined a formal partnership with Dorak Holding, a prominent brand in Turkish tourism sector, and has added an on-site restaurant, Angels & the Searchers, serving traditional Turkish and international cuisine and, in line with the hotel’s design theme, also offers a Medieval menu. In addition to Angels & the Searchers, the hotel is home to a winter garden bar, which also claims an antique goblet collection, which even has one of King King Louis XIV’s wine glasses in its collection.
Sacred House’s spa is located underground and, in a nod to the famous Florentine poet Dante, is named Inferno. The spa’s pool, designed with red mosaic, features statues of two angels holding an inscription from William Blake and is surrounded by pillars and red Chesterfield sofas in front of a fireplace with chandeliers overhead, to lend a mystical air to the atmosphere. In addition to a menu of wellness treatments, the spa is also home to a Turkish hamam, so guests can join an authentic cleansing ritual.
