For years, Portugal was one of the best kept secrets of European travel. Rich in history and brimming with sunshine and great wine, Portugal more than held its own among European destinations – albeit with a laid back vibe. As it turns out, under the radar topped with a big dose of culture is exactly what we want. While the roads less traveled may be a little more crowded now that the secret’s out, luxury hotels are more than keeping up with demand – and serving up a host of delights for those visitors just discovering – or returning – to Portugal. Voted 2023 Travelers’ Choice, The Albatroz Hotel overlooking the Bay of Cascais is one.
LOCATION
Nestled in romantic Cascais, the Albatroz is just a short walk into town for leisurely promenades along cobblestone streets lined with shops and restaurants. Beyond the charms of this seaside villa, there are many options to fill your days. Just 30 minutes from Lisbon’s city center, the Albatroz offers the best of all worlds with the flexibility to zip in and out of one of Portugal’s most vibrant cities while still having the luxury of a coastal escape away from the city hustle.
HISTORY AND SUNSHINE
The presence of another time and place is what we love when we travel far and the Albatroz serves up this magic with three architecturally stunning buildings seamlessly linked for a little royal history and a nod to modern luxury. The former palace of the Duke of Louié built in 1873 is considered the centerpiece of the hotel. Known as the “Almond Box,” this historic space conjures up a candy box impression with a golden-hued façade that shimmers in the sun. Next to these royal digs is an 18th century building celebrated for its Italian architecture, ornate balconies and sweeping views of the beach. For the most recent iteration of the Albatroz, visit the White House building which offers a beach chalet experience and smartly connects to the main building. The result is a luxurious, three-tiered property that takes you through the best of Cascais, past and present. There are 45 rooms and 6 suites available with a choice of beach or city views, all decorated to reflect the style and stunning décor of the building.
GOURMET CUISINE WITH A VIEW
The Albatroz offers a range of dining choices starting with its formal restaurant complete with panoramic views and an inventive menu that merges traditional Portuguese cuisine with Mediterranean fusion and local flavors. Wine lovers and connoisseurs will be impressed by the world-class wine cellar where wine tastings and pairings can be arranged for a deeper dive into the best of Portuguese wine. For lighter fare, a terrace menu and take away offer delicious choices throughout the day.
THE LEISURE CLASS
Sea and mountains meet to create a stunning coastline and once you have your fill of beachy walks and sunbathing, you can take in the coastline from another perspective – an excursion on the hotel’s own yacht. Sunset cruises and guided trips all the way to Lisbon offer a glamourous way to experience the region. Apart from sailing in style, one can lounge around the hotel’s outdoor pool and for golfers, Cascais boasts an impressive course that has hosted some of the most renowned players in the world.
DEEP ROOTS
Portuguese people are known for their warmth and love of adventure. You’ll experience this as soon as you arrive at the Albatroz and are greeted with a hardy bem-vindo – the Portuguese word for, ‘welcome.’ The Albatroz has a way of touching visitors with its beauty and laid back luxury which is precisely why so many return again and again. Prepare for your own awesome discovery. You may never want to leave.
